It’s Greek-American heritage month! And we have just the perfect Nerdcore entry for the first installment.
Sparte by Patrick Weber and Christophe Simon has so many easter eggs. And by eggs, we mean balls. You’ll see a page with panels of nude wrestling men and nude statues. It’s like strolling through Elysian Fields. And the peep hole? I mean, apart from the wars and the atrocities and the pederasty, it sounded like a fun time.
However, the editing and extracting did take a little bit of time, so, yeah.
You may also notice some of the wrestling poses are taken from famous statues from Greek antiquities.
The blurb (translated from French):
In the second century BC, Sparta is no more than a shadow of its former self. The city of elites that once made the Peloponnesians and the Persian Darius the Great tremble has now succumbed into decadence. Sitting on the Spartan throne, the troubled King Nabis vows to restore the city’s greatness at all costs. He doesn’t hesitate to break the ancient laws that once made the Lacedemonien capital great.
Refusing to accept the inevitable, several men want to restore Sparta’s former glory. They retreat to Mount Parnon to wage a resistance. These warriors, brave and mysterious, are led by a charismatic commander, Agésilas. They don’t care that their brave commander is in fact female!
Diodorus is a Helot, the lowest class of the Spartan society. He’s a bounty hunter. One day, King Nabis summons him to the palace and demands Diodorus to bring the King the head of Agésilas.
The two warriors fight one another, in a battle worthy of their ancestors’ glory.
